Vishu marks the Malayalam New Year and is one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated in Kumily and across Kerala. Observed in the month of April, Vishu symbolizes new beginnings, prosperity, and hope for the year ahead.
The most important ritual of Vishu is the Vishu Kani, which is prepared the night before. It includes golden flowers (Kanikonna), fresh fruits, rice, vegetables, coins, a mirror, and a traditional brass lamp placed in front of Lord Krishna. Seeing the Vishu Kani first thing in the morning is believed to bring good fortune throughout the year.
In Kumily, families begin the day with prayers, followed by the distribution of Vishu Kaineettam (money given by elders to children). People wear new clothes and enjoy a festive vegetarian meal known as Vishu Sadya, prepared with seasonal produce.
